Actress Mary Tyler Moore passes at the age of 80.

After a long battle with diabetes, Mary Tyler Moore has passed away. Family members rushed to the hospital earlier this morning to say their goodbyes. She has reportedly been on a respirator for more than a week so many were not optimistic in regards to a full recovery.

Mary Tyler Moore is probably best known for her starring role on the same titled show “Mary Tyler Moore.” It was during that period (at age 33) when she was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Her show was iconic for establishing women as independent figures. On the show she played Mary Richards, an independent, single woman working at a Minneapolis TV news station.

Before that, Moore was known for her role on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” as Laura Petrie, Dick Van Dyke’s TV wife. Both “Mary Tyler Moore” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show” saw an ample amount of success establishing Mary Tyler Moore as a TV icon.

After those two prominent television shows, Mary Tyler Moore was featured in a few more TV specials. She was also later nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in the critically acclaimed 1980s film, “Ordinary People.” In addition she wrote two memoirs where she acknowledged overcoming alcohol addiction. She has also been a spokesperson for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and a strong activist for animal rights.

After a long list of ailments that left her in a state of struggle, Mary Tyler Moore is finally at peace and will be missed.
