Star Wars Obi-Wan Spinoff with Ewan McGregor Might Happen

Obi-Wan-Ewan-McGregor

Ewan McGregor may reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a “Star Wars” spinoff film!

While it may be a rumor at the moment, it is very likely that it may not remain a rumor for long. Ewan McGregor may play fan favorite Obi-Wan once again and this time could have a film entirely centered around his character.

Since Disney obtained the rights to the “Star Wars” franchise, they have had huge plans to capitalize on their earning potential. Earlier this year they committed to multiple films along with 3 additional spinoff films with one making it’s debut in 2016. Director Josh Trank (“Fantastic Four”) and Director Gareth Edwards (“Godzilla”) have been linked to two of the spinoffs thus far which are rumored to be centered around Han Solo, Boba Fett, and/or the X-Wing Squadron.

MakingStarWars.net recently leaked information that one of the spinoff films focuses on Obi-Wan. They also claim that early production for the film has already begun after a formalized fan poll was taken regarding their favorite character and Obi-Wan beat out characters such as Han Solo, Yoda, and even Darth Vader.

“I’ve heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works. For the spinoff movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters. But I’m hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website, etc.) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie.”

I’m a huge “Star Wars” nerd (I’ve got the lightsabers on my wall to prove it!) but I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at the outcome if this is true. The prequels were lackluster (to say the least) but there were some great things to come from those films and Ewan McGregor as a young Obi-Wan was definitely one of them. If you recall the greatest battles from the prequel films, I think anyone would admit that Obi-Wan had a majority of the most entertaining battles. From Darth Maul, to General Grievous, and finally to Anakin/Darth Vader himself, Ewan McGregor practically kept the interest alive.

Obi-Wan on Tatooine

Out of all of the spinoff films, I would say that an Obi-Wan film would be the most intriguing, especially if it took place between episode III and IV. If they spent the time explaining Obi-Wan’s “waiting period” on Tatooine and maybe had him on a few off-world adventures, I think the film could cast a much wider net for audiences young and old who are familiar with the character.

What do you think Star Wars fans, would you be excited for an Obi-Wan spinoff film?

This would be fantastic! Throw in a Qui Gon ghost with Liam making a return and I would explode with joy!

Me too. Sticky, sticky joy.

Hell yes! Give us an entire universe of possibilities but continue to release half-baked movies based on the same handful of characters! Nothing better than that!

Alistair

If we’re going to get the same wooden acting and awful Alec Guinness-style accent as the prequels – no thanks.

I need to see this

I read the first four books in the X-wing Rouge Squadron series (Michael A. Stackpole) and I have to say they should definitely be the focus of at least one movie!
