Point Break Reboot

The “Point Break” reboot trailer is here brah!

For all of the 90s fans out there, it’s safe to say that we’ve all been a little curious about the “Point Break” reboot that is coming this year. While we’ve known Luke Bracey was cast as Johnny Utah and Édgar Ramírez was cast as Patrick Swayze’s character Bodhi, their version of the characters is what has had me curious. Take a look at the first trailer below and tell us what you think of the new Utah and Bodhi!

The original “Point Break” was one of those horribly good films that quickly became a cult classic. Both Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves both fit into their roles so well and amplified the film’s “ridiculousness” with their overly-animated performances and painful yet humorous dialogue. In my opinion it was a film that can’t be rebooted because the nature of the first film was not intentional. Things fell into place with such disarray that it somehow created a film formula that cannot be recreated.

So what do you do when you can’t recreate a formula? You change the entire flow of the film. This reboot of “Point Break” is definitely going for a more serious action vibe with a multitude of extreme sports shots. But while this film carries the name of the original film and the names of those original characters, this trailer shows it does not capture the essence of the original film. There might be chemistry between Bracey (Utah) and Ramírez (Bodhi) but it definitely isn’t the chemistry that was present between Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.

I tend to not make assumptions from a trailer but I am not a fan of this version of the film. The original “Point Break” was known for it’s unintentional over-the-top nature and this just seems forced. I may watch it if I get a screening or when it hits Netflix, but I have no interest in seeing this film otherwise. They’ve tarnished a film that shouldn’t have been rebooted and are definitely capitalizing on the name to sell tickets.

What do you think of this trailer? Is this a blasphemous blow to the original “Point Break?”
