The name "Dark Phoenix" carries a lot of weight for the X-Men franchise. As one of the most pivotal stories about one of Marvel's most powerful characters, the last X-Men film from Fox seems to be relying upon name alone. While the trailer pleases from a visually aesthetic point of view, the plot does not feel like it will hold water.

Isn't it weird that so much has changed in the world and film business and yet FOX's 'X-Men' is still going strong. Almost 10 years ago the MCU started. At that point this wave of superhero movies had been going on for about 8 years and many were claiming it was getting ready to end. "Blade" proved that a Marvel based superhero film could work. Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" was where the genre kicked into high-gear. But it was "X-Men" building off of the success of "Blade" that truly got it started. We have a lot of movies to get through so lets get started. *SPOILER WARNING!*

Disney has officially acquired 20th Century Fox and the Marvel Cinematic Universe will vastly expand. Now with everyone wondering when we will see the incorporation of the X-Men and Fantastic Four, I believe that the process has already begun and we may see this integration sooner than expected.

So the new Wolverine film, “Logan” seems to be doing pretty well and as is surprisingly common with this series the future is not certain for the X-Men. They may have kick-started the genre for many in the mainstream, but they certainly didn't start the Marvel Studios method of planning out their series. Now Bryan Singer said to have had some ideas and plans for X-Men 3 after completing “X2: X-Men United.” However as he left to do his dream project of “Superman Returns” the writers and new director Brett Ratner went in their own direction. The result, “X-Men: The Last Stand” while not necessarily awful or panned at the time it was a disappointment and huge step down from the last two films. After years of getting through the highs and lows Bryan Singer came triumphantly back to the franchise to direct “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” In my personal opinion the best film of the series.

It is both a tragedy and a triumph that the ninth and final installment of Hugh Jackman as the beloved Wolverine is the superlative outing of the character. The dark tone and gory gritty action that “Wolverine” veteran James Mangold gives James Howlett, coupled with standout performances from all of the actors, easily makes this the best film of the X-men franchise, and as some may come to say, one of the best comic book films made to date. Why is it, then, that only as the wick of the candle burns to the end does it shine brightest?

Bryan Singer recently disclosed that the X-Men film following “X-Men: Apocalypse” will be set in the 1990s. While that seemed obvious enough given the timeline of the upcoming and previous film, Singer more recently revealed that he wants to introduce an alien element. Supplementing that reveal, he led us to believe that we’d have a change of setting for the team by bringing them to outer space.
