The original “Beauty and the Beast” often has a special place in the hearts of Disney fans and considered by many to be the best piece of animation the studio has ever produced (including yours truly) and has been revered at a level that “Cinderella,” “The Jungle Book,” and “Sleeping Beauty” have never quite been able to achieve. Naturally, that leaves the “Beauty and the Beast” remake with some massive shoes to fill and while it doesn’t quite achieve that feat, they manage to come surprisingly close.

Alright, there's no way to sugarcoat this, 2016 just wasn't the greatest year for movies. We were bombarded by countless films that were bad, underwhelming or flat out had no reason to exist. Thankfully, some gems have managed to shine through enough to make the overall year of disappointment worth it. So without further ado, here's my top 10.

Last night, ‘La La Land’ cleaned up at the Critic’s Choice Awards with a whopping eight wins including Best Picture, so it should probably come as no big surprise that the Golden Globes proved to be equally kind by rewarding them with 7 nominations including Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. Trailing just behind the Damien Chazelle film are ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Manchester by the Sea’ with 6 and 5 respectively.

“Harry Potter And The Cursed Child” hasn’t been enjoying quite the amount of acclaim that the rest of the series has gotten. But the stage play has nevertheless proven to be a big hit in London since it’s premiere last summer. So it probably won’t come as a huge surprise to Potter fans that plans are now being made to bring the show over to Broadway with the hopes of opening in Spring 2018.

The film’s would-be director Rick Famuyiwa (“Dope”) has now left the project over you guessed it, “creative differences.” This latest setback is also likely to delay the film’s production and eventual release.

The cultural impact of “The Wizard of Oz” is undeniable. This of course, is why the film’s iconic ruby slippers currently sit in the Smithsonian. Sadly, even great pieces of film history are not immune to wear and tear and preserving them can be quite expensive. The good news is the Smithsonian has launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to raise the money necessary to restore and conserve the now 77-year old movie prop.

Marvel announced yesterday that Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker has become the latest actor to become part of the Black Panther cast. His role will be as the Wakandan warrior Zuri. The size of his role in the film is naturally still unclear but in the comics, he served as a loyal servant to both T’Challa and his father and despite his advanced age was known to be one of the Black Panther’s best warriors.

Little news was given about the remake after the initial report but now Disney has officially announced that a live-action remake of the 1998 animated film will be released on November 2, 2018.
