10 Game of Thrones Stars in Blockbuster Films

Ten “Game of Thrones” actors that appeared in blockbuster films!

“Game of Thrones” has a strong fanbase to say the least. While many of these actors are directly associated with their roles on the hit HBO show, many have appeared or will be appearing in a few high profile Hollywood films. Here are ten prominent “Game of Thrones” stars that have appeared or will appear in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters.

Peter Dinklage – X-Men: Days of Future Past

Peter Dinklage as Boliver Trask in X-Men: Days of Future Past

Peter Dinklage plays Tyrion Lannister on “Game of Thrones” and is probably my favorite character on the show. Outside of his merits on this show, he’s proven himself as an actor with amazing range in films like “The Station Agent” and “Death at Funeral.” Now with his popularity in “Game of Thrones,” he’s scored a lineup of other films and more recently had a huge role in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Playing the role of Bolivar Trask, he was a formidable foe responsible for the creation of the X-Men‘s iconic robotic adversaries the Sentinels.

While Bolivar Trask was not traditionally a man of short stature, Dinklage more than proved that size doesn’t matter. He added new depth to the character and gave an outstanding performance that added to an already engaging film.

Lena Headey – 300

Lena Headey as Queen Gorgo in 300

Lena Headey may play a villain on “Game of Thrones” but her villainous nature doesn’t carry over into all of her roles. While her role on “Game of Thrones” may be her most notable, it wasn’t her first role as a Queen.

Playing the Queen of Sparta and wife of Leonidas, Lena Headey proved herself in Zack Snyder’s “300.” While she wasn’t on the battlefront like other Spartans, she was solely responsible for the political persuasion of Sparta. Eliminating the corruption and taking ownership of her kingdom, her strength paved the way for the sequel to the film by inspiring her people to fight.

Emilia Clarke – Terminator: Genisys

Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor in Terminator: Genisys

Daenerys Targaryen aka Khaleesi is the “Game of Thrones” character that everyone is waiting to see flourish. Being young and coming from a theatre background, Emilia Clarke is still bit fresh to the Hollywood scene but has made quite an impact. As the “mother of dragons” she has become an iconic “Game of Thrones” character that fans can’t resist. Now with the upcoming release of Terminator: Genisys, Emilia Clarke will take on another iconic role.

Playing the role of Sarah Connor, Clarke will be the second “Game of Thrones” actress to play the role. While Lena Headey had the role in the TV series “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” Emilia Clarke is the actress that will have the chance to reboot the films. This Summer we will get to see Emilia Clarke play another strong female role other than her iconic “Game of Thrones” character with the release of “Terminator: Genisys.”

Sophie Turner – X-Men: Apocalypse

Sophie Turner was cast as Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse

Sophie Turner plays the role of Sansa Stark. In “Game of Thrones” she is timid and frightened but with her recent casting in X-Men: Apocalypse, she’s going to have to flex her muscles.

While she has been more of a victimized character in “Game of Thrones,” in “X-Men: Apocalypse” she will be playing one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel comic book universe. She definitely has the look for Jean Grey and I believe as an actress she is capable of taking on the role. When the film releases in 2016, hopefully Turner can prove that she is more than just a damsel in distress.

Aidan Gillen – The Dark Knight Rises

Aidean Gillen as a CIA Op in The Dark Knight Rises

The most manipulative and charismatic character in “Game of Thrones” has to be Little Finger aka Lord Baelish. While he’s not the most menacing with the sword, he is definitely the most menacing with his tongue. Outside of “Game of Thrones” he had a minor role as a CIA Operative in The Dark Knight Rises.

Officially Gillen was the first person to capture Bane, even though it was a setup. Aidan Gillen seemed to draw more from his character in the HBO series The Wire than his character on “Game of Thrones.” His cocky nature as a CIA Operative created an ego that ended up being his downfall when Bane ended up eliminating him very quickly at the beginning of the film. Because of this, Gillen’s character seemed to leave the film as quickly as he entered. If you didn’t look closely, you may have not even noticed that “Little Finger” was in the film.

Jack Gleeson – Batman Begins

Jack Gleeson as a kid in Batman Begins

Even though he is a child Joffrey Baratheon aka King Joffrey may be the cruelest of the kings in “Game of Thrones.” With such ruthless cruelty, it’s hard to imagine him as an innocent child that would need saving. He was just that in the Christopher Nolan film “Batman Begins.”

While the role was minor, Jack Gleeson was the small boy that idolized Batman and was also a victim of the Scarecrow’s fear gas. He appeared twice throughout the film, once as the kid that Batman throws his grappling gun to and once as the child that Rachel Dawes saves from the Scarecrow. Gleeson was so young in this film that he would go unnoticed if it were not for the for the recognizable blue eyes and blonde hair that were signature attributes of King Joffrey.

Gwendoline Christie – Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Gwendoline Christie to appear in Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens

As Brienne of Tarth, Gwendoline Christie was the only woman to change Jaime Lannister’s heart. Despite being a woman, she emerged as a powerful knight in the “Game of Thrones” world which is mostly male dominated. What differentiates her strength from Cersei or Daenerys is that her strength is physical strength on the level of other men in this world. She can hold her own with a sword and does so with immense force which makes it no surprise that her unique attributes landed her a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

While there has been no official announcement of what her role will be in the film, rumors and speculation have led to the idea that it will be dark and menacing. Based on how she can wield a sword in “Game of Thrones,” I’d expect that she has been pitted for a role where she wields a lightsaber as well. If she ends up being the formidable foe that many have speculated, it will be a first for the Star Wars franchise. The “Star Wars” universe has been male dominated and the inclusion of a key female lightsaber-wielder will definitely be a new addition to what we’ve seen in the past.

Natalie Dormer – Captain America: The First Avenger

Natalie Dormer as Pvt. Lorraine in Captain America: The First Avenger

While Sansa Stark was the first to catch the eye of King Joffrey, it was Margaery Tyrell who captured his heart. With her charming personality and subtle but manipulative influence, she was the only person to temporarily break Joffrey’s sadistic exterior and be a voice of reason. With that said, it’s not surprising that her charm was able to temporarily seduce Captain America at a time of weakness.

Playing the role of Private Lorraine in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” she was the only other woman to steal a kiss from Cap besides Peggy Carter. Her time in the film was brief but she sure stirred up trouble between Captain America and his love interest Peggy Carter.

Sean Bean – Lord of the Rings

Sean Bean as Boromir in Lord of the Rings

Sean Bean is notoriously known for dying in films, so it was no surprise when Ned Stark’s life was ended in “Game of Thrones.” Sean Bean is so notorious for dying in films that we even presented a short list of films where he didn’t die.

While many loved his role in “Game of Thrones,” Ned Stark is not the first medieval fantasy character he’s played. In the ever popular “Lord of the Rings” films he played the character Boromir who also met his fate. He was not an integral part of the story but he was important by showing that the hearts of the most noble men could be corrupted by the power of the ring. Even though “Lord of the Rings” may have been a bigger role, I still think that his role as Ned Stark was the role I prefer for Sean Bean.

Jason Momoa – Batman V Superman

Jason Momoa as Aquaman in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

Khal Drogo may be the most intimidating character in “Game of Thrones” and responsible for planting the seed that allowed Daenerys Targaryen to grow into the “mother of dragons.” While his time on the show was short-lived, his impact was immensely iconic. He was the only character that fans begged to have resurrected in some way and his popularity is probably what put Jason Momoa in the spotlight to be cast as Aquaman in the upcoming film Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

While the only thing we know about his upcoming role is from a photo, that photo says a lot about his portrayal of Aquaman. Many are excited to see his sea-worn approach to the character rather than the traditional green and orange fish suit. Hopefully Jason Momoa can live up to the photo and the expectations that have been set by fans.
