Netflix pays $12 million for Idris Elba film

Netflix pays top dollar for “Beasts of No Nation” starring Idris Elba

Netflix is making another power move for theatrical release film. According to Variety, Netflix paid close to $12 million for the upcoming war film “Beasts of No Nation” and star Idris Elba. Rumor has it that the media company is making play at the Oscars by purchasing this film which would be a first for a streaming outlet.

Netflix paid nearly $12 million for the rights.

According to insiders, the media distributor is planning a strong Oscar push for the feature, which is based on the bestselling novel by Uzodinma Iweala.

With shows like House of Cards and “Orange is the New Black making Netflix name at the Golden Globes and the Emmys, it’s no surprise that Netflix has their sights set on an Oscar. With a film like this, it might just be their chance.

“Beasts of No Nation” has the names tied to it to be Oscar worthy and the story is original as well. Following the journey of a boy forced to join a West African army, this film has potential by touching on a controversial subject that is unique to many other past Oscar contenders. It’s not the first time we’ve seen a film that covers the hardships of child soldiers but it is the first time we’ve seen credible filmmakers attached to something of this nature.

Netflix has already established a list of upcoming theatrical releases including the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon sequel and multiple exclusive Adam Sandler film releases. Despite already having a few theatrical release exclusives, “Beasts of No Nation” seems like it could be the only formidable Oscar contender.

Netflix is setting all sorts of precedents with their deals over the past year. Having an Oscar nominated film exclusive to their name would reestablish Netflix as an even more reputable company and could change the entire industry. We will have to wait and see if their gamble plays off.

Do you think this is a good move for Netflix?
