Jack Sparrow Gets Dirty For ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’ Extended Look Trailer, But Will The Movie Be Good?

Fans get their first look at Johnny Depp’s iconic swarthy, rum-loving and swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates” extended look trailer and it’s dirty… literally… like, he’s covered in mud.

After over a five year hiatus, Disney revives their one-time golden boy Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow for the fifth movie in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Up until now, we have only seen a brief teaser for the movie, with perhaps the most menacing meanie of the series Captain Salazar played by Javier Bardem. But after a surprisingly quiet prelude, Disney has just released their new Super Bowl trailer for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” online… and Geoffrey Rush’s Barbossa is back too! More after the jump.

The official Synopsis reads as follows:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Since the maiden voyage of the franchise back in 2003 with “Pirates of the Caribbean of Pirates” which earned Johnny Depp an Oscar nod for his portrayal of the Keith Richards inspired Jack Sparrow, the films have lost their luster in the eyes fans and critics. To put it bluntly, the clunky and joyless sequels should be sentenced to walk the plank. But after seeing Bardem’s menacing baddie Salazar in the teaser, coupled with a strong showing of returning cast favorites, high hopes should be had for the upcoming installment.

The robust returning cast include Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, Kevin McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Stephen Graham as Scrum, and gives fans a sense of hope that the floundering franchise could once again set sail and capture the magic of the first film. The supporting cast will also feature newbies Kaya Scodelario (“The Maze Runner”), Brenton Thwaites (“Maleficent”), Golshifteh Farahani (“Rosewater”) and even, in what is a perplexing but intriguing move, music legend, get this, Sir Paul McCartney in an unnamed role!? Yeah, that “Beatles” guy… or as most millennials will remember him as the little known artist that Kanye West helped bring attention to…

The tone seems dark with loads of action and, based on the trailer dialogue, it seems like it will be a unique and well-acted departure from the often campy other sequels. While the trailer doesn’t give us much to go on, it looks good from a visual standpoint, has enough starpower to win Mario Party (bad nerd joke) and Javier Bardem makes me very excited to see how the baddie role unfolds! As Jack Sparrow would say in his signature slurred cadence, “Savvy?”

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” sails into theaters May 26, 2017 n 3D, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D.

Pooya: Since his wee lad-dom, Pooya has been a sommelier of cinema. It was likely some acting bug, fallen from the dust riddled ruby curtains of an enchanted old stage that did it. Those cinematic scarabs must have burrowed deep into his brain, irreversibly altering his mind, turning the poor boy down a dismal path. From his earliest years the strange boy would aimlessly wander the aisles of countless video rental stores, amassing his trivial knowledge with vigor. These actions befuddled the boy’s parents, who still would lovingly oblige his unusual attraction to the motion picture. Often seeking refuge in the cushioned seating of his local movie theater, the odd adolescent would immerse himself in the scripted and effects riddled realities unfolding on the screen before him. During his collegiate years, he was twice spotted on stage performing bizarre theatrical rituals before awe-struck audiences. When he departed from academia, he left behind his youth in exchange for a labor routine, but the strange young man never lost his long-cultivated love of film. Recently, Pooya was approached by FilmFad.com to join their budding team of entertainment bloggers. After hours of coaxing and an undisclosed number of honey jars, he accepted their offer. Finally he had come full circle. Finally, at FilmFad.com, he was home.
