“Black Panther” has its director and it’s “Selma” Director Ava DuVernay

There have been rumors and speculation regarding Ava DuVernay’s role in the MCU but now we know her role with certainty. While it was expected but not certain, the MCU Exchange confirmed expectations with its exclusive news that Selma Director Ava DuVernay will be sitting in the director’s chair for the upcoming Black Panther film.

Following months of rumour and speculation, MCU Exchange is now able to exclusively report that Ava DuVernay(Selma) has been hired by Marvel Studios to direct the upcoming Black Panther film.

While DuVernay received critical acclaim for “Selma,” as a director she’s still pretty fresh. Outside of “Selma” a majority of her work consists of TV movies and shorts. “Selma” may have wooed critics with its dramatic perspective regarding one of Dr. Martin Luther King’s most difficult experiences, but Marvel films are something entirely different.

I admit that I am excited to see a director take on “Black Panther” that can fully encapsulate the hardships of racial prejudice but it’s questionable as to how Ava DuVernay will handle the action/adventure side of the film. A strong point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been its fluidity when connecting the array of films together. If one film strays from that path, then it may hurt the universe as a whole. There is no doubt DuVernay will bring more depth to Black Panther’s character than most directors, but as far as superhero or action/adventure films go, her only experience has been working as a part of promotional services.

Overall I think that Ava DuVernay is a great choice to direct “Black Panther” and choosing her gives the character the chance to be one of the most dynamic characters in the MCU. While I have confidence in her abilities as a dramatic director, I’m curious to see how she will do when it comes to balancing the drama with the superhero action/adventure aspect. I am one of the first people to say that character development is important, but when it comes to the comic book film, you also need to know how to throw a punch when needed.

How do you think Ava DuVernay will do directing “Black Panther?”

  • I don't know if the film will really be touching on racial prejudice since its about an African king.

    • I don't think the film will be geared towards racial prejudice, but I am happy to see a director that could bring that dynamic into the film.
