‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ Trailer Is Visual Sci-Fi Candy

The new trailer for Graphic Novel turned feature film, “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” is here and it’s a smorgasbord of science fiction eye candy.

From the filmmaker who brought audiences “Leon The Professional,” “The Fifth Element” and most recently Scarlett Johansson’s take on Bradley Cooper’s “Limitless,” “Lucy,” director Luc Besson is back with a new movie! This time the legendary sci-fi filmmaker is adapting the highly popular graphic novel “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” into a feature length live-action film and the new trailer is finally here. Co-starring Cara Delevigne (“Suicide Squad”) and Dane Dehaan (“Amazing Spider-Man 2”), with a cameo by bad-gal songstress Rihanna, “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” has a star-studded cast rounded out by Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke and John Goodman.

A team of special operatives, played by Delevigne and Dehaan, charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the youthfully mischievous duo embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

The film’s new trailer gives audiences a glimpse of the vast expanses of science fiction landscapes Besson has sculpted, filled with pops of jubilant color, unique space creatures and a diverse array of sprawling CGI landscapes. In my opinion, the trailer does a bit too much to justify the film by literally naming all three of Besson’s hits and noting the film was adapted from a “groundbreaking novel that inspired a generation.” At the same time, the fast-paced energy, vibrant visuals and signature Besson sci-fi feel moves this closer to the top of my must watch list for July.

“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” hits theatres on July 21st.

Pooya: Since his wee lad-dom, Pooya has been a sommelier of cinema. It was likely some acting bug, fallen from the dust riddled ruby curtains of an enchanted old stage that did it. Those cinematic scarabs must have burrowed deep into his brain, irreversibly altering his mind, turning the poor boy down a dismal path. From his earliest years the strange boy would aimlessly wander the aisles of countless video rental stores, amassing his trivial knowledge with vigor. These actions befuddled the boy’s parents, who still would lovingly oblige his unusual attraction to the motion picture. Often seeking refuge in the cushioned seating of his local movie theater, the odd adolescent would immerse himself in the scripted and effects riddled realities unfolding on the screen before him. During his collegiate years, he was twice spotted on stage performing bizarre theatrical rituals before awe-struck audiences. When he departed from academia, he left behind his youth in exchange for a labor routine, but the strange young man never lost his long-cultivated love of film. Recently, Pooya was approached by FilmFad.com to join their budding team of entertainment bloggers. After hours of coaxing and an undisclosed number of honey jars, he accepted their offer. Finally he had come full circle. Finally, at FilmFad.com, he was home.
