It the case of adaptions, some things work better than others. Some older works, particualrly the superhero genre, have issues with the "science" built in them doesn't hold up for casual viewers. In the case of Ghost in the Shell, the world this story inhabits is still years away from even our most cutting edge tech, so we're purely in science fiction mode and its not much of a problem. Visually, it think they've captured enough of the look, without having to rely to heavily on the anime. They can always go back to the original manga if necessary for visual idea, much like Robert Rodriguez did with Sin City. I'm just glad the kerfluffle over Johansson being cast in the lead role has died down.
